Well here it is, the final episode of the Chill with The Chola podcast. After 3 years of podcasting, I have decided that it is time to bring this project to an end and focus on other projects. I have enjoyed producing the podcast, but, I have to admit that my heart has not been fully in to producing the monthly show for some time now.

I continue to enjoy downtempo music and I intend to release mixes from time to time, just not on Podomatic.com, not on a monthly basis, and not under the “Chill with The Chola” name. An ARCHIVE of the entire Chill with The Chola podcast has been brought online over at Definitive Downtempo so that you may access old episodes. Any future releases that I make will also be available on that site under the “Definitive Downtempo” title and category.

First off, my apologies for the delay in posting the “Best of 2009″ podcast. A bad case of bronchitis really took the wind out of my sails (and my lungs for that matter.) Since I am already so late in posting this episode, I am going to forgo my typical “Best of the Best” editorial and just let the music speak for itself.

This month I decided it was time for me to explore one of my favorite styles of ambient music… “SPACE MUSIC.” Now I know that my “Space Traveler Series” touches on the spacey side of ambient music, however, those episodes are still very much tempo driven. This month’s downtempo podcast is comprised of music all but devoid of true tempo. The songs are much more freeform for the most part, only really driving tempos using arpeggiators or rhythmic sound. Space Music creates massive soundcapes that invoke mental imagery of far away worlds, stars, and nebulae.

I have been a fan of Space Music since I was a child. I think the first time I ever heard this style of music was during a car ride home from the beach while listening to “Hearts of Space” on NPR… I was fascinated with it. I have tinkered with my own space music throughout the years and decided to include an original, improvisational piece of music that I created and recorded on the fly for this podcast. While I am certainly an amateur at producing this wonderful music, I must say that it is an amazing experience to sit down to a keyboard and create it on the fly. Surrounded by LED’s, LCD’s, blinky lights, sliders, knobs… it almost feels as if you are piloting your own spacecraft through a universe of sound that you are creating with your own creative mind. I have a real appreciation for just how complicated it is to control so many timbers, morphing between sounds, tempos (or lack thereof,) keys… worlds… all the while keeping it all together, in a freeform flow of consciousness. Composers like Serrie, Gulan, Brennan, etc are true masters of this craft.

I invite you to put on a pair of headphones, turn off the lights, lay down, hit play… and drift away in to a wonderful universe of sound. Don’t worry, you will be back home in a little over 80 minutes.

Oh yaaaaa! The drink of the day… it is something I am looking so forward to. For those of you that have ever been on a cruise, you completely understand how fun the “drink of the day” can be, and this month’s downtempo podcast is inspired by just that.

You see, I have an upcoming vacation that I am excited about. I am not taking a cruise (this time) but, we are going to carry over that wonderful idea to our trip in to unspoiled Florida. This month is a follow up of sorts to my “August in the City” downtempo podcast from 2008. My girlfriend and I had tons of fun over the last year while she lived downtown . This month’s podcast is a continuation of my “Space Traveler” series and is once again dedicated to the folks over at Lounge Radio. I try to add an episode to this series every year and I figured it was time to slow things down, and, bring out the deeper side of downtempo for this month’s show.

I took a trip to Berlin in July and had an amazing time. I had the opportunity to visit a few clubs, lounges, and bars. It really seems that Germans love their Minimal Electronica. I was pretty surprised just how much that trip influenced my song selection this month. Almost inadvertently I found myself seeking out deeper, minimal types of music to mix along with ambient and chill out tunes. I am quite pleased with what came about from that subconscious decision. After listening to the complete episode, I am quite sure that Berlin has forever left its mark in my heart.

 So this month I decided it was time to finally follow up 2007′s Jazz Steppin’ episode with another dose of chilled out drum and bass. Jazz Steppin’ is really about kicking up the tempo a bit but still maintaining a chilled out vibe. Lots of jazz, r&b, samba, and funk combined with intelligent drum and bass music.

A lot of Drum n Bass is hard and edgy these days. It seems that you really have to dig to find the jazzier stuff which is a real shame. However, spend some time digging and you will stumble across some great artists still producing music with a softer, more “musical” sound. Heavy DNB is fine for doing some serious “dancing” or for working out. However, the jazzier stuff is what I want for sofa surfing and just chilling out.

Well I hate to say it… it is unfortunate… but the fact of the matter is that every podcaster comes to a point where he has a creative block. Moments become hours, hours become days, days become weeks… etc, etc, etc.

As an avid podcast subscriber, I have always hated when a DJ misses a show… don’t they know that we are waiting, patiently waiting, to listen to what they will bring us next? I hate when they do that… oh wait, I am guilty of just that! I am indeed sorry.

I did not post a podcast in January, the very month that the Chill with the Chola podcast turned two years old. I will try to make up for that throughout the year, posting an extra episode here or there if possible, or even better, finding more guest DJ’s to produce mid month episodes.

I finally found my muse after booking a trip to Chicago this coming weekend… I cannot wait! I am headed up to Chicago to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the girl that I love. To be in one of my favorite cities with my favorite person excites me to no end. A city full of romance, UNBELIEVABLE food, scenery, jazz/ blues, etc… I just cannot wait!

This month I have decided to revisit a classic “Chill with the Chola” idea… the Urban Cocktail Hour, inspired by the trip that I am about to make to one of this nation’s finest cities. The Urban Cocktail Hour is about celebrating the music inspired by the big city… jazz, funk, lounge, downtempo, jazzy hip hop… it is all here. Wow! This year has flown by. It seems like just yesterday that I was struggling to compile the “Best of 2007.” As tough as that was, compiling the Best of 2008 was an even larger undertaking. I have such an emotional connection with so much of the music that I pick for this show, that going back through it all is almost like time traveling back to the feelings that I was experiencing that particular month. It is a pretty cool experience, but, an exhausting one at the same time.

After perusing through my catalog of downtempo, chillout, bossas/ sambas, and lounge tunes from the past year, I chose my favorites from each episode… my “first picks.” Those first picks totaled two and a half hours of music! Needless to say, it was a long, heart-wrenching night last night taking two and half hours of music and choosing the best of the best for a show that is under eighty minutes long. Creating a synopsis for a year of amazing music can be a very difficult job, but I hammered through it.

Every one of the artists in this month’s podcast are absolutely amazing. I encourage you to seek them out, learn about them, listen to their music, and support them by purchasing their music. In addition, I would like to highlight a couple of my absolute favorite artists of 2008…

If I had to pick one artist that truly left me captivated this year, it would have to be Senor Coconut And His Orchestra. What can I say about Senor Coconut? (UUUH… AAAAAAH!) He is writing, arranging, and remixing music the EXACT way that I like. I am hard pressed to find a song in his catalog that I do not like. (BLEEEEEE!) It’s an amazing mix of latin influenced music such as mambo, samba, and cha-cha with an electronic undertone… a mixture of live music with a big-band flare, and machine. (HUUUUUH!) Seek out Senor Coconut And His Orchestra, if you are lucky enough to live in a country in which they tour, go to a show (I sure wish that I could,) and buy every bit of this music that you can!

By the way, if you have no idea what the stuff in parentheses littering the paragraph above means, well, then you obviously have not familiarized yourself with Senor Coconut’s music. Get to work!

Another group worthy of special note is the Worldwide Groove Corporation. This is the second year that their music has made it on to my “Best of” show. Their remix of Third Day’s “Show Me You Glory” flat out left me awestruck! I have literally listened to this song hundreds of times and to this day, I still get chills up and down my spine. In my opinion, “Worldwide Groove Corporation” is synonymous with “quality production” and I look forward to continuing to build my own library with their music.

Worldwide Groove Corp recently started a remix project of Chillodesiac Lounge, vol. 1: FEVER (one of my album picks from last year) in which they have invited DJ’s to remix their work. I am definitely looking forward to checking that out.

It has been more than a year since the original “Bossa Chola” episode and I am pleased to say that I have finally created a sequel to one of my most highly regarded episodes. I was very happy to see a huge selection of Bossas, both new and old, available on just about every major MP3 outlet online. This is quite a change from the last time I decided to put together a show dedicated entirely to bossanova which required a huge ammount of time digging through old cd’s and compilations.

November 2008 brings you another installation of smooth bossanova and samba with a twist of lime. This podcast is a mixture of classics as well as neuvo bossa nova that is sure to completely mellow you out. If I had to define lounge music with one style, it would definitely be with Bossa Nova. This is a perfect mix to play while enjoying your favorite martini with friends.

Sour… yea, the last month has left a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for so many positive things in my life that overall, I feel pretty good. However, the loss of an old friend and two family friends this month has been a little overwhelming.

That being said, I heard a lyric in a song in this month’s downtempo podcast that yanked me right out my melancholy madness. To quote Matsi… “my cup isn’t half full, it’s overflowing.” I think that is the perfect way to look at life. No matter how tough things might be for you at the moment, I think that it is important to look around you and see all of the wonderful things that you DO have and, to thank God for each and every one of them.

I think a lot of us have been overwhelmed by the darkness that tends to make its way in to our lives from time to time. As Americans, every time we turn on the TV lately, we seem to be reminded of it. A scary economy, a wild election year, loss of jobs, bad weather…WHATEVER… it seems to be everywhere.

In this month’s downtempo podcast, I have really worked to put together a show with songs that just put a smile on my face… I hope it does the same for each of you. Take some time this weekend, say a prayer for someone that needs it, do something nice for a complete stranger, snuggle with the one that you love most (it’s SO good for the soul,) read a book, take a nap, pour a drink, listen to some positive music, and hang out with friends and family. Hello everyone, I have a very exciting Special Guest Mix this month for your listening pleasure. Chris Lindsey from Slackline Radio was nice enough to put together a fantastic mix for the “Chill with the Chola” podcast entitled “Urban Sensibility”.  Soooo, this month I decided to put together a nice, relaxing, downtempo podcast featuring some fantastic new chillout tunes and artists. I have found myself a little on edge the last 3-4 weeks because I am in the middle of Hurricane Central (Florida.) I really needed some music to chill out too! I started digging for music for this episode weeks ago and found a TON of chillout, downtempo, ambient, trip hop, acid jazz, etc. I played around with the set quite a bit and it was tough to scale down the episode to a manageable 70 minutes. Well I am back after taking a month off from the podcast and have decided to post August’s podcast a few days early. Thanks again to Datapusher for covering me last month.

This month’s downtempo podcast was inspired in part by my girlfriend’s upcoming move to downtown Orlando. She found a killer deal on a “deluxe apartment in the sky,” and, she is looking forward to being in the heart of the city. I must say that I am pretty excited too! It will be fun to get reacquainted with the city after living in the burbs for so long. There is so much more to Orlando than “a mouse.” I am looking forward to seeking out some of the great food, music, and atmosphere that this city has to offer. It has been too long.

Well it looks like Datapusher over at Trans:verse Records must have enjoyed slowing down the tempo on his decks for the “Chill With The Chola” podcast because he has sent over a sequel to his Dubventure downtempo mix! This works out perfect for me because I would have really been pushing things to try to get a new podcast out by the ninth. Keep your eyes open for a set mid month by “yours truly,” I will try my best to deliver one to you. If not, I will see you next month.

This month’s downtempo podcast is the second installment of Datapusher’s wildly popular “Dubventure.” There was a huge response to the first episode and I am glad that Datapusher has decided to put together another mix for us. It is another hard-hitting, IDM/ Electronica, bass heavy, intelligent-glitch experiment in to the world below 130bpm’s.

When I asked Datapusher to explain what he was shooting for with this set, he responded…

“I was shooting with a ’12 gauge pump action’ for bass heavy, mid tempo breaks tracks, bridging the gap between downtempo and bassline style breaks.”

Well, I would say that he has certainly accomplished that!

This set reminds me of those “eyes-half-opened” after-parties spent in dark dens after a full night of clubbing. It is a moody journey in to the sofa surfing universe.

Somewhere between full blown breaks or house music, and, what we might consider “downtempo,” there is an extremely intelligent sub-genre of music created almost exclusively for “the transition.” This music is not quite the club music that you were dancing to earlier in the evening, or, the more acoustic sub-genres of downtempo/ chillout that you want to enjoy when you awake, have a beer, and start that BBQ on a Sunday. However, it certainly serves a distinct purpose and there are some amazing artists working in this realm.

This is a sub-genre of downtempo music that I hardly touch these days. Datapusher can still rock the dance floors, I stick to playing sets for the couches, dinners, and bedrooms.

Datapusher starts his set off with an extremely “busy” set of tracks and slowly moves you towards a calmer place. When the set ends, the stereo almost begs you to wake up, put on some bossa, nujazz, or funk, and, get that BBQ started. Great job Datapusher!

In the past year I have been given the opportunity to seek out independent artists and labels that I dig, and, to try to give them the credit that they truly deserve by hopefully providing a medium that they can use to expose the world to what they do best.

This month I decided it was time to get back to my roots and dive in to a more progressive side of downtempo music. I am a HUGE fan of deep, Progressive House/ Breakbeat music and I have been for over a decade. It is nice to see that a lot of what make progressive music, well, “progressive,” is also utilized quite often in downtempo and chillout music. The “music” in a song tends to be more important than the beats and rhythm and that is what really defines this style. Rich, complex melodies that invoke emotion are key to Progressive music and this month’s episode is an example of just that… at a slower tempo.

In this episode I have decided to start things off with an hour of very deep, dark, moody tracks. The first hour touches the “darker” side of chillout by utilizing minor and diminished keys. This gives the set a very haunting feeling, but, it is also incredibly melodic. This is something new for this show but do not fret! After the first hour I slowly lighten things up a bit as I make my way though songs in major keys to ensure that you are left with a postive vibe. I do not want to take you TOO deep after all! Enjoy.

All of the artists in this month’s playlist truly standout in my mind as icons of downtempo music. That being said, there are a handful in this list that shine so bright, I really must address them individually.

Ulrich Schnauss- What can I say, Ulrich’s music really touched me this year. The release of “GoodBye” left me absolutely AWESTRUCK! If you do not own this album yet, you MUST buy it.

Schnauss’ music is incredibly ethereal. His creations are not just songs, they are amazing soundcapes that give you a sense that you have been teleported into huge worlds of sound. His music absolutely envelops you in a warm, rich, progressive, tonal utopia. Purchase “Goodbye,” pop it in to your CD player or mp3 player, put on your best headphones, turn off the lights and lay down on the couch for an hour. I assure you that you will awake in a peaceful bliss!

Cybophonia- Cybophonia is the epidemy of cool chillout and lounge. Eros Minichiello hails from the “Italian area of Switzerland,” and I swear, everything he touches is GOLD! The production value of his remixes are profound, they truly should be studied.

I look forward to getting to know all of his new music intimately in 2008, and, I am sure the “Chill With The Chola” show will certainly feature some more of his tunes very, very soon!

Worldwide Groove Corporation- Fever: Chillodesiac Lounge Vol. 1 is one of my favorite downtempo albums of the year. This CD is full of new arrangements of jazz classics and is a great addition to your lounge collection. I have listened to this album at least weekly since I bought it.

If I had to sum up this album in one word it would be… “sexy.” The song selections are fantastic, the vocals are smooth and sensual, and the production is top notch. Throw this album on, cook a nice dinner for that special someone, and enjoy an intimate evening together.

Bossacucanova- This group has to be my “pick of the year.” After stumbling on to their CD, “Uma Batida Differente,” I was simply blown away by their style.

Bossacucanova fuses traditional Latin styles such as bossanova and samba, with electronica styles such as Drum ‘n’ Bass and House. The blend becomes a new hybrid all of its own and can be referred to as “Drum ‘n’ Bossa.” Man oh man; this music is melodic and rhythmic heaven!

Even though I cannot understand a word of the lyrics, the vocals are very smooth and soothing, the beats are rhythmic and almost trance inducing, and the production value is top notch.

Listening to Bossacucanova’s music instantly transports me to a place with warm, sunny beaches, strong cocktails, and pretty girls. Listen to any of their CD’s, I bet you will feel the same. If you consider yourself a downtempo/ lounge conesouer, you cannot afford to be without their discography!

For the last couple of months I have really wanted to put together a show that featured some cool downtempo House music to really round off the year and come full circle. My January 2007 show featured some great Chicago, Latin, and Deep House tunes and I really wanted to get back to some of that. So this month I have switched gears a bit compared to the last couple of month’s podcasts which have featured a lot of lounge, bossa nova, downtempo, etc. However, this is a very chilled out set which is quite jazzy and funky!

This month’s podcast starts off with some pretty dramatic Latin influenced House music that is bound to energize you with its syncopation. I find myself tapping my toes and dancing in my seat every time I listen to it. After the initial dose of Latin flavor, a great selection of jazzy and funky vocal house is the special of the day. The set wraps up with some very sexy vocal tunes with a distinct R&B influence.

Wow, I am running late on posting this month’s episode. Officially I give myself until the 9th of every month to post the episode and I needed every bit of that this month.

As I said in last month’s episode, I trained for an MS150 and rode the 150+ mile event September 29-30th. The bike ride ran on A1A for a portion of the ride which left us exposed and vulnerable to 30+ mph wind gusts, rain, sand, salt, and Red Tide being blown in to our faces. The experience left me sick and weak, but, I am feeling a lot better today and figured I needed to get some music posted for all of my loyal listeners to enjoy.

This month’s episode does not really have a “theme” but is a mixture of nujazz, acid jazz, lounge, and bossanova. Ultimately, I wanted to create something loungey and cool to listen to while enjoying some beers during Oktoberfest. I will keep the text portion of the podcast short this month and let the mix speak for itself! ENJOY!

It’s “Nu,” as in Nujazz, or maybe Nu-Jazz, or perhaps Nu Jazz… however you want to spell it, it is super cool stuff and it is here just in time for the Labor Day holiday weekend in the U.S.!

So many new and exciting things are happening in my life, I guess it was bound to overflow in to my creative outlet. I had so much fun with this month’s podcast! I hope that you can tap in to all of that positive energy!

Sooooo… Nujazz, what a great umbrella term for such fantastic styles of music. It’s smooth and sexy, funky and fun, and most importantly, emotional and expressive. It combines the progressions of traditional jazz music with the power and complexity of electronic music. Had I known that Jazz and Electronica would fuse in to such a wonderfully eclectic range of styles, I don’t think I would have ever put down that Tenor Saxophone all those years ago!

This month’s downtempo podcast is a seventy-six minute musical journey, during which, I explore a broad range of styles that make up Nu-Jazz. The mix starts with what feels like a late 70′s/ early 80′s flashback! The first three or four songs are very reminiscent of tunes created by Earth, Wind, and Fire or The
Parliament Funkadelic at the peak of their popularity. However, it is all “Nu” material.

After the initial dose of funk, we quickly move in to more traditional feeling Nu Jazz tunes which seem particularly influenced by broken beat, house, and classic jazz. The set ends with what is really becoming somewhat of a staple here at “Chill with The Chola”… the Bossanovas. I just cant get enough of samba and bossa nova lately and I have found a great selection for this show.

This chillout mix is perfect to throw on during cocktail hour to get the conversation flowing. As cocktails flow and hunger grows, you will find the seductive bossanovas will set the perfect mood for a quiet candle lit dinner experience! Enjoy.

After taking a two month hiatus from the loungey side of chillout, I decided it was time to get back to the roots of this show and head “Back to the Lounge!” Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed creating the last two podcasts, but, there really is something about jazzy bossa novas, sambas, and acid jazz that bring a smile to my face.

This set really has a kind of “summer feel” to it. It is the perfect mix to throw on while chilling out by the pool with some cocktails but it could also be played in the coolest of hipster lounges. Heck, I even dug it last night while I was reading a book! It is an all around great set for lounging out.

If you enjoyed this month’s podcast I would like to bring two artists to your attention. The first is Fabio Nobile. Fabio hails from Italy and is probably the coolest jazz musician I have heard in years. Not only do his composition and arrangement skills blow my mind, he is a virsatile musician who plays percussion, bass, guitar, piano and more! The second artist hails from Nashville, Tennessee… Worldwide Groove Corporation. Wow, I was surprised to hear such great lounge music come out of a city that is so well known for country music! I guess I have just become accustomed to chillout music coming from the west coast of the U.S. or from overseas. I found Worldwide Groove Corporation through their myspace page and purchased their debut CD Fever: Chillodesiac Lounge Vol. 1 the day it was released. It has been in heavy rotation ever since!

Chillodesiac Lounge Vol. 1 features a mixture of terrific original tracks, and, some of the most creative remixes/ rearrangements of classic jazz songs that I have ever heard! Worldwide Groove Corp have taken jazz standards such as “Tangerine,” “My Funny Valentine,” (one of my all time favorites) and “Mas Que Nada” and breathed new life in to them by creating amazingly hip, sexy, lounge arrangements that this generation as well as the next will enjoy! Buy this CD! You will love it.

Wow, what a month! In this episode I decided to slow things down a bit and really explore those great synthetic landscapes and atmospheres that so many talented artists have created for us.

While the show is certainly much dreamier than normal, it is far from ambient. It is very spacey and has that “big Progressive sound” that I love so much! It is full of rich, harmonic melodies, and, has plenty of rhythm throughout the set, albeit not in the forefront of most of these arrangements. < < EDIT > > If you enjoy this set, I would like to recommend two artists in particular for you to research. The first is John Serrie.

Mr. Serrie is an artist that my father turned me on to in the early to mid 90′s. At the time I was fascinated with electronic music because it was completely revolutionary to me. My father enjoyed music in all forms. From classical music, to classic rock, jazz, etc… he has an exceptional CD collection. At some point he played Serrie’s Planetary Chronicles Volume 1 for me and happened to note that the music that I had started to love was not that much different from the music that he enjoyed himself. That stuck with me.

You may not know his name, but I can assure you that you have probably already heard Serrie’s music. If you have seen the movie, What the Bleep do We Know, watched the Discovery Science channel, seen PBS, or have been to a planetarium in a major city in the U.S… chances are you have already been captivated by his ability to lift you off this planet!

The second artist I would like to recommend to you is, Ulrich Schnuass. Like many DJ’s and electronica fans alike, my first experience with his music was Sasha’s remix of “On my Own,” the conclusion to one of Sasha’s most revolutionary DJ CD’s ever… Involver. (I am a little embaressed that I was not “in the know.”)

After being hooked by the likes of Sasha, I bought all of Schnuass’ music I could get my hands on. I found myself seeking him out and quickly became enamored by his creations.

Like many of his fans, I ultimately found myself anxiously awaiting the release of Goodbye. And with it’s release, all I can say is… WOW! If you like music that will give you goose bumps, BUY THIS CD! I closed my set this month with “Einfeld,” and as amazing as that song is, it was a hard choice to make from his new CD.

Seek out Serrie and Schnuass and I am sure you will find yourself enamored, much as I have. I am not sure there is an amp and speaker system that can really due them justice, but, a pair of headphones or a nice home stereo will get you started! Their music music is not just good… it is good for the soul. Take an hour or two for yourself… I am sure you will agree.;)

I decided to switch gears a bit for this month’s show by exploring some sub-genres of Drum ‘n’ Bass music. I am a firm believer in the idea that tempo is just a small part of what makes a piece of music appropriate for chilling out. More important is a piece of music’s rhythm, melody, and its ability to create a mental picture or a sense of well being. This month’s episode is a perfect example of that idea.

I was a huge fan of Drum ‘n’ Bass in the late 90′s. The music seemed worlds away from the Progressive House and Breakbeats of the time. Drum ‘n’ Bass was influenced so much by jazz music at that time and blended acoustic sounds with electronic beats. Artists such as Flytronix, Omni Trio, and Ez-Rollers experimented with complex jazz melodies and rhythms, all of the while blending a smooth vibe, with a sped up breakbeat. The style seemed to have more of a “half-time” feel to it, which made it fun to dance to as well as lounge out to. As Drum ‘n’ Bass continued to mature, for at least a few years, it seemed that it had taken a harder, sharper turn. The once smooth, jazzy flavor was now replaced by hard beats, distorted basses, dark melody, and NOISY soundscapes. Around the turn of the century, I became disinterested in the style for the most part and moved on.

I was very happy to see that there are tons of newer producers creating “Jazz Step” and “Vocal Drum and Bass”. These sub-styles of the genre fuse jazz, Latin rhythm, and House with sped up breaks. Once again, that smooth, “half-time” feel is alive and thriving!

This month’s set starts a little more beat driven than some of you may be accustomed to here at “Chill with The Chola.” However, do not fret! As soon as you hear Ben Westbeech’s “Get Closer”, you will begin to feel that comforting House music influence. The set then quickly moves in to more of a Latin vibe until it is time for a little down tempo interlude starting with Tape Five’s “Cocktail D’Amour.” After a quick “breather,” the tempo picks back up and I am sure you will feel the need to shake your butt as the beats continue to be peppered with spicy Salsa, Samba, and Drum and Bossa! The set ends with one of the most spiritually uplifting pieces of music that I have heard in quite some time, Ror-Shak’s “Fate or Faith.” I think I have listened to this song 100 times in the last month and it still sends chills down my spine. As the name of this month’s podcast may “elude,” I have decided to put together a complete show featuring songs from “newer” Bossa Nova/ Samba artists. There is certainly something perfect about these downtempo genres for chilling out! While I am fond of all types of Latin music, to me, Bossanova and Samba are true classics of lounge music. There are some fantastic new artists out there who are fusing Bossa Nova and Samba with newer electronic styles such as Breakbeat, Drum ‘n’ Bass’ and House and I am loving every bit of it.

I have to tell you, I was surprised at the amount of effort it took me to track down songs and artists for this feature. It seems that there are quite a few Bossanova artists releasing albums outside of the United States but, getting my hands on their CD’s/ MP3’s proved difficult. Quite a few artists were unable to provide CD’s to the US due to publishing agreements and additionally did not provide MP3’s for sale.

Anyway, I did quite a bit of searching and found some terrific artists for this show, and, learned a lot about the styles, instruments, and culture that make up Bossa Nova and Samba along the way. If I can make one recommendation to anyone who might like this month’s set, check out a great group named ”Bossacucanova.” My first exposure to them was a random purchase of Uma Batida Differente through Amazon.com and I was blown away by how great that album is. I just ordered Bossacucanova’s entire discography!

Take some smoothed out lounge music, add a splash of hip hop, and stir in a little jazz for mixer and you have got an “Urban Cocktail Hour!” If you like your cocktail hours loungy and your hip hop jazzy, you’ll love this mix!

For this month’s mix, I found myself inspired to play music with a little more acid jazz and hip hop influence. I marked it “Explicit” because there are a few random curse words but it is far from offensive. There are plenty of sultry melodies, great vocals and smooth rapping to fill out this sexy hour long episode. I really think the live acts I saw this month influenced my choices in grooves. I saw The Roots and Solillaquists of Sound perform live this month and had a great time. Next week I am going to see Kid Beyond and cannot wait!

I just wrapped up my first mix for 2007 and it’s “so me”… smooth and chilled out! This mix is very jazzy and has a mixture of styles but there is definitely an underlying latin influence to it. There are plenty of sax’s, funky bass lines, smoothed out rhodes… you know the deal. There are also house, disco, and funk influences in it too. This is definitely a lounge experience!

I really love the fusion of styles and this is the kind of stuff that I actively seek out. Not just the music, but, clubs and DJ’s that play it. It’s getting a lot harder to find it in Orlando, so if you have any recomendations, by all means let me know.
